Martin House Respite Care

What does it do?
Martin House Children’s Hospice provides specialist and holistic palliative care to children and young people with life-shortening illnesses, and their families, across West, North and East Yorkshire, including the Bradford District. We offer planned respite to families and young people to come and stay for a few days at a time a few times per year. We have 15 bedrooms at our purpose built hospice near Wetherby, catering for all children, teenagers and young adults, even with very complex needs. Coming to Martin House is like going on holiday. We provide bedding and towels, all food is cooked for you and your washing is done every day. Children and young people are cared for round the clock by qualified paediatric nurses, with medical care led by Paediatric Palliative Care Consultants. The library, dedicated art, music and interactive sensory rooms are available for use at any time and the gardens include three distinct play areas for the children, all wheelchair accessible. Parents who wish to stay with their child can sleep in hotel-style accommodation or with their child if they wish. We have a separate facility for young people which includes a multimedia den, recording studio and private garden. Families would need to bring clothes, toiletries and all the equipment, feed and medicines required for the stay. Aside from the planned respite stays, we also offer emergency care, symptom control and end-of-life care and beds are kept available for children who need this care whenever possible. All care is provided free of charge to families.

Who is it for?
Families with children with life-shortening illnesses who live anywhere in West, North or East Yorkshire.

Anyone can refer a child from before birth to age 19. Call 01937 845045 or through our website: www.martinhouse.org.uk (at the top there is a link Refer a Child)
