Eccleshill Adventure Playground - The Big Swing Inclusion Project

What does it do?
Eccleshill Adventure Playground, known locally as The Big Swing provides free of charge, open access adventure play sessions for children and young people aged 5-16. The playground is open 50 weeks a year, 5 days a week, including after school, during holidays and on a Saturday. Typical activities include den building, open camp fire cooking, outdoor physical games and other activities deemed as more ‘risky’ in their nature. Through our play sessions we identified a need for targeted work with certain individuals who accessed the playground on a regular basis. As a result we have expanded and are now running The Big Swing Inclusion Project. The project is aimed at children and young people who access the adventure playground with an additional need or may require extra staff support whilst on site. Through our sessions, staff will support the development of physical health, emotional health and communication and creative skills. Both focused and free play activities will be available during sessions to offer space for personal growth and development, whilst ensuring that a child’s needs are taken into consideration at all times. The project offers a closed private session every Monday (up until February half term 2020) and an open access session every Saturday and Friday. Saturday sessions will run 12-3pm and Friday sessions from 3:30-6.

Who is it for?
Our inclusion project supports children and young people aged 5-15 with additional needs and/or disabilities.
