Relate Bradford & Leeds

Relate Bradford is a small, passionate and ambitious charity, in the heart of Bradford, providing a range of therapeutic counselling services, supporting young people, families, individuals and couples since 1948.

We can provide you with the breathing space where you can feel heard, valued, respected, understood and more in control of your feelings and of your life.

We help all sorts of people in all sorts of situations. We can support you whether in a new relationship, in a long-term relationship, or not in a relationship at all. We can support you through major relationship crises to smaller issues that are perhaps making you unhappy.

At Relate Bradford & Leeds, we aim to develop and support healthy relationships.  We deliver inclusive, high-quality counselling services that are relevant at every life stage, helping heterosexual and same-sex couples, families and individuals to make relationships work better, by improving their understanding of relationships and what makes them flourish.

We provide:

Relationship counselling

It doesn't matter if you’re on your own, married, living together, single, gay, bisexual, straight or transgender - we’re here to help you, however you identify.

We have experience in counselling people from different backgrounds, including LGBTQ+ individuals and couples, so you can rest assured you'll find a counsellor to meet your needs.

Lots of people have an idea of what relationship counselling is and think that you only need counselling when things get really bad. But we're here whenever you need us, no matter what situation you face in your relationship. Even if your problems seem trivial, we can help.

Family counselling

If you're having problems in your family life, there are lots of ways we can help you.

You might be a parent worried about your child's behaviour or how a divorce may impact on your family. You might be part of step-family and need help adjusting, or you may be arguing with parents or siblings and need support communicating with each other. Family counselling helps you to understand and cope better with the stresses and strains of family life.

Young people's counselling and school based counselling

There are all sorts of reasons why you might want a bit of extra help from Relate. Things might be worrying you at home or at school, or you might need help and advice with your own relationship.

Psychosexual therapy

Sex is a very personal thing, and talking about it can be embarrassing.

But talking is often the best thing you can do to improve your sex life. Sex Therapy can help you if you're experiencing difficulties in your love life and can help you to improve physical intimacy.

All couples go through phases where they don’t have the time or energy for regular sex. It’s natural to want better sex and sometimes there are specific psychological or medical reasons for your difficulties.

Don’t be embarrassed about it – talk to us.

Is Relate marriage counselling?

Relate used to be known as 'marriage guidance.' We specialise in relationships and do offer counselling for couples and individuals, we offer counselling/therapy to young people, families and individuals. We also provide psychosexual therapy. We are specialist in healthy relationships and can support people with many aspects of relationships.

Is counselling free?

We are a registered charity and for Bradford, we receive funding to provide free/subsidised counselling services. If we have fulfilled our funding obligations and are no longer able to provide fully funded sessions, we will discuss this with you. We do ask that if you can, you consider supporting us, with a donation to support our work, if possible.

What can I expect from counselling?

You will have a first appointment called an initial assessment. In this appointment the counsellor will listen to you and discuss what you want from counselling. They will explain what services we offer and then they can decide if it is possible for us to help you. They will explain the number of sessions you might receive and answer any questions you have. Our counsellors are very caring, friendly, and non- judgemental.

Will counselling work for me?

You could attend an initial assessment to discuss what help you feel you need and what support we offer. Many people have said to us that they weren't sure if counselling was right for them but that they are so glad they have given it a go. Telephone or online sessions can make your first session less nerve- wracking. All of our staff are friendly and want to help you.
