National Citizen Service (NCS)

What does it do?
The Challenge is a local provider of National Citizen Service (NCS). National Citizen Service (NCS) is a government backed scheme, which aims to bring together young people in Year 11 and Year 12 from all different backgrounds. By offering new experiences, it helps them take on new challenges, learn new skills and meet new people. NCS takes place over 18 days (with breaks in between) during the summer holidays. It also includes a 5 day residential at an outdoor education centre, a 5 day residential in University accommodation and 8 days non-residential volunteering with local charities and community organisations.

Who is it for?
NCS is for Year 11 or Year 12 age students however, this can be requested from age 15-24 if the young person has a statement of SEN, or an EHC plan that would have prevented them from attending whilst of eligible age. NCS is available to young people from all kinds of backgrounds, with or without SEN(D), behavioural or support needs. We offer tailored support plans and additional support on a case-by-case basis, based on the information provided in the NCS application and any required follow up. This includes collecting medical and support information, a copy of an SEN Statement or EHC plan, feedback from medical professionals and teachers and support workers where needed. We would only ever be unable to take a young person on NCS if we were unable to support them safely on the programme or if they were putting themselves, other young people, or staff members at risk.

How do I access it?
Applications or referrals can be made via our website at www.ncsyes.co.uk or over the phone on 020 3510 5050. An application can be made by a social worker, parent, guardian or young person. For specific questions or concerns you can contact your local SEN(D) Outreach associate by emailing molly.taylor@the-challenge.org or calling 07392873476.
