Who is it for?
Our Local Authority Led Resourced Provision at Grove House Primary school provides up to 12 places from Reception to Y6 for children who are severely vision impaired, and require more specialist support than a mainstream school could reasonably be expected to provide.
Pupils accessing a Resourced Provision place will need to have an EHCP or be undergoing an assessment for an EHCP. They will be tactile learners, who use braille and/or specialist technology as their main method of communication, or they will require large print at font 36 or above. Pupils who access the provision and its resources will have vision impairment as their primary need on their EHCP.
What do we do?
In this specialist team, we have Qualified Teachers of the Vision Impaired (QTVI), a Curriculum Resource officer and Vision Impaired Specialist Support Assistants (VISSA). They are trained in a range of skills including braille and braille reading, supporting tactile learning as well being able to use specialist equipment to modify resources so that all learners can access the curriculum. Each pupil has a specifically designed mobility programme, delivered and monitored by one of our qualified Habilitation Officers. We have a continued delivery of training and support for mainstream and support staff to ensure all pupils with a vision impairment achieve their potential. We keep in regular contact with parents and carers through parent support groups, parent consultation evenings and annual reviews to discuss pupil’s individual learning goals progress.
How does it work?
For most of the school day, pupils with a visual impairment work alongside their peers in class. The children also have an additional curriculum to ensure they have the opportunity and time to develop skills to become an independent learner and maintain good self-esteem as a vision-impaired person. This additional curriculum includes pre-braille, braille, specialist technology, independent living skills, social skills, mobility and the children also take part in Go4it trips that provide opportunities for new experiences and challenges outside of the classroom.
