DEX - Deaf Ex-Mainstreamers Group

What does it do?
Provide information about the needs of deaf children in education to enable quality of life and safeguarding. Facilitate participation between deaf young people and providers. Undertake research, audits and mapping of education and children's services. Liaise with government, Deaf organisations, Local Authorities and health services to promote deaf children's rights and needs. Enable parents of deaf children to better understand their deaf child's needs for improved communication in education and outside school.

DEX set up our DEX Deaf Youth Council five years ago in response to a demand from deaf young people aged 17-30 in West Yorkshire to meet, socialise with a deaf peer group, learn about deaf history and culture, undertake learning and development opportunities, and campaign on issues important to them. We run monthly activity sessions ranging from bowling trips to a visit to London and have held numerous personal development courses including an ASDAN Citizenship and Participation course.

We also offer individual casework support with issues including health, benefits and immigration. DEX Website

Who is it for?
From 0 to 30 years for deaf children and young people in the UK. Providing information to all parents of deaf and hard of hearing children, and deaf young people, about education and social and health care needs.

We are a deaf-led organisation of professional users which conducts research and our users’ experiences to consult with government organisations on how to improve the quality of education and life chances for deaf children of all levels of hearing loss. Information is currently available on our website and DEX Perience Facebook.
