Encouraging Resilience in Children and Young People

There has been much discussion at I CAN over the last three months about how to best support the emotional wellbeing and resilience of children and young people. Circumstances and roadmaps out of the pandemic remain cautious and unpredictable. This past year has certainly tested everyone’s resolve and patience!

The challenges facing professionals, families and of course the children and young people with speech, language and communication needs we serve have not gone away. Children and young people’s resilience in the face of these challenges has been extraordinary.

That is why in this edition we welcome articles from guest contributors on what parents, teachers and practitioners have done to encourage resilience in children and young people with speech, language and communication needs. We hear from Ellen, a teenager so determined to raise awareness of Developmental Language Disorder that she has launched her own awareness raising website. I have also taken the liberty of including an article on the importance of working together as I step down as Chief Executive of I CAN.

Finally, please join me in welcoming Jane Harris as my successor as she starts her new role as Chief Executive of I CAN on 1 April.

Bob Reitemeier, Chief Executive of I CAN
