Families First

What does it do?

Families First is a Bradford programme, funded by the Government, running from 2012 to 2015, which will work with families facing serious problems, to “turn their lives round”. We will offer a joined-up ’menu’ of support, looking at the needs of the whole family, not just of individual members. The programme is also designed to last beyond the end of the funding, by making long-lasting changes to the way that different agencies, such as the Council, Police and Health Services, work together, in order to improve services and get better value for money

Who is it for?

Families First aims to support families who are experiencing a mixture of difficulties in their lives. Our key targets, as set by the Government, are to: *Reduce truancy, *Cut levels of crime and anti-social behaviour, *Support all over 16s in the families into work We also aim to deal with other problems that the families may be facing including: *Debt and financial difficulties, *Housing problems, *Health issues, *Substance abuse *Domestic violence. We aim to work with around 600 families in the first year and similar numbers in the next two year.

How do I access it?

We are building up a picture of the needs of families who could benefit from the support of Families First. We are also looking at which services are already working with members of the families. They will contact the families to offer a programme of support, which may involve a keyworker, who will make sure that services are provided in a joined-up way which meets the family’s needs.

Who provides it?

The Families First programme will be delivered by those agencies already working with the families.

The Families First Team will deliver additional support and access to a range of services, where this is required. A team of staff from partner agencies; Police, Probation, Education and the Health Service are being recruited to bring their expertise to assist development of a Families First way of working.

How do they help?

This is not a new service, but a new way of working. We hope to avoid asking the families the same questions and doing the same things over and over again. We can offer a range of support to families to help them to improve their lives. We think it is important that we listen to the adults and children within the families so that we can give them the support they want and need. By understanding the needs of families we hope to improve the services we offer and the way we offer them.

Other information

Bradford’s Families First Programme was started under the Community Budget programme in 2010. It is now being taken forward with funding from the Government’s Troubled Families Team. Bradford has signed up to the programme in March 2012 and are being funded on a payment by results basis. We will receive the ‘reward’ element of the funding if we meet a set of targets, based on cutting truancy, youth crime and anti-social behaviour and helping adults into work.
